Chemotherapy For Lung Cancer

Chemotherapy for lung cancer is designed according to the symptoms, the cancerous stage, the age of the patient, the time of approach of the affected patient to the cancer specialist etc. In general, both the attending physician and the patient should be aware of baseline technical information on the kind of chemotherapy for lung cancer proposed.

Toxicity During Chemotherapy For Lung Cancer

Toxicity due to the prolonged administration of chemotherapy has been well-documented. Chemotherapy often includes anti-cancerous drugs in combination such as cisplatin, which is usually administered intravenously to patients with lung cancer. However, the effects of chemotherapy depend more specifically on type of lung cancer and extent of its spread. If metastasis is encountered extensively in organs such as the liver, the kidneys, the bones etc. or if it's a small cell lung cancer, then chemotherapy may not be the most successful approach. However, to alleviate pain in the patient caused by the lung cancer, a combination of chemotherapy and other supportive therapy may be required.

Chemotherapy for lung cancer includes medicaments that have undergone rigorous clinical trials in affected patients and demonstrated anti-tumor effects. During such therapy, patients should analyze the symptoms he or she is experiencing and should be able to clearly describe the pain level in the thoracic region to the thoracic specialist. It should be understood that if the mediastinal lymph node is involved, then the intensity of pain will often be greater and at times even intolerable, thus warranting immediate medical intervention. Hence, during routine chemotherapy the patient and the attending doctor need to exercise caution and yet continue the prescribed treatment unless otherwise necessary.

Monitoring During Chemotherapy

Monitoring is required for the in-patient who is receiving multiple drugs for his or her lung cancer. This monitoring is essential because of the fact that there are certain medicaments that can severely affect the hepatic system or blood cells in body. Similarly, there are recorded incidences of renal damage by the drugs used under the pretext of chemotherapy for lung cancer. In addition, the experienced clinical oncologist will want to be carefully monitoring the patient for the presence of any symptoms that demonstrate an impact on the nervous system as well.

These clinical precautions must be undertaken on a priority basis. Why? Because even though the chemotherapy treatment may have anti-cancerous effects, this doesn't preclude the treatment from significant side effects. Every patient is unique, and chemotherapy can produce unexpected consequences on the various organs of the body. Therefore, it's essential that during chemotherapy treatments, the patient is monitored not only for the successful introduction of the chemicals into the body, but also for the effects of these chemicals on the body systems unrelated to the lung cancer.
